The Unfortunate Healthcare Treater, The Hapless Healthcare Therapist: Narcissistic and Borderline Personality Disorder clients.

THE GRIT

by

M. D. Tophus

This publication deals with the risks to the healthcare treater/therapist, and tackles the concept of protective measures necessary to reduce negative impact upon the healthcare service provider.

Emphasis is given to the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’t’s’ whether one is working in the healthcare treatment, or therapeutic, arena (with narcissistic and borderline personality clients).

It is written in the context of differential diagnosis which so often occurs in diagnosis of personality disorders, but in particular the two of focus.

There are commonalities between the two disorders- and thus, the guidance provided in this publication embraces this.

They both pose similar issues for the treater/therapist. For instance, the feeling of helplessness that: 1/ one may not be able to undertake successful treatment of such a complexified client; and, 2/ the therapist/treater is at risk of the client’s capacity for toxicity.
